Cultural Heritage in Istria: Festivals and Events in July


Occasional rain showers, lower than average June temperatures – it doesn’t quite feel like summer these days in Istria. However, don’t get discouraged, you’re good with a light jacket in the evening – you can still enjoy the perks of our mild Mediterranean climate. And if the temperatures don’t go up in July, we’re here to turn the heat on. These five cultural events in Istria this July will warm up your hearts, souls and stomachs.

The revival of Rovinj’s rich fishing history

During Tuesdays and Thursdays dive into rich Rovinj fishing history and experience Rovinj’s fishermen life. This excellent experience will, literally, drive you through culture and life of Rovinj fishermen, and explain how they, regarding hard circumstances of being a fisherman, still managed to add entertainment and allegria to their life. After visiting the Ecomuseum Batana hop into an actual Batana (famous Rovinj’s fishermen boat, whose building process is a protected immaterial cultural heritage) and take a ride through Rovinj coastline. You will finally reach the local tavern Spacio Matika in Vladimir Švalba street (you will enter the street from sea entrance) where you can enjoy a traditional dinner with of course, fish specialties. During the night, you will enjoying bitinadas – indigenous Rovinj fishermen poetry songs, each time performed by a different local Rovinj band… All aboard!

Medieval Nights at the Castle Grimani

Every Wednesday in July at 20:30

Svetvinčenat, Kaštel Morosini-Grimani

How about learning some medieval history in Istria’s inland – Svetvinčenat? Every Wednesday of this July, the historical association Kaštel organizes Medieval nights in the castle Morosini-Grimani. The event starts with a one-hour show of knight duels, performances of burning witches, and other following medieval activities. The show revives the once important role of Grimani castle (a protected cultural heritage building) – which you will have the chance to visit after the show.  For a full experience, you can visit the Grimani Gallery and have a look at the exhibition of replicas of medieval weapons. Last, but not least – local producers will present their indigenous products on their stands.

Lavender Day at Pekici

7th July, Pekici, Savičenta

Spend a spa day out in the open – get treated by Mother Nature! On July 7th take a walk through lavender fields of OPG Pekici and recharge your batteries with healing scents of this powerful plant that has been present in Istria for a long time. This full day event will begin with an organized tour through lavender fields and later will take place at Svetvinčenat Cultural and Performing Society where you will have the chance to learn something about this plant at the local fair. Local lavender growers will present their lavender and other indigenous Istrian natural products. Best part of this event? If you’re coming with your kids, they can attend a terracotta workshop and make their own souvenir to bring back home.

Stories of Žminj

Wednesdays in July, Žminj

Experience Istrian rural life for one day! In the very heart of Istria, each Wednesday of July during daytime experience Žminj like a real local! The program of this event called ‘stories of Žminj’ will take you through this small village through all its corners. Start the day with a free guided sightseeing tour of Žminj with an English speaking guide, and later take break from all the walking at Latus – a small family firm of high quality dairy products. Latus opens its doors to visitors on Wednesdays and Fridays with their organized tastings of their dairy products paired with wines from local producers. Bon Appetit!

In the kingdom of Muškat wine

20th July, Momjan

Muscat wine festival and tasting

The sweetest out of three indigenous grape varieties in Istria is Muscat or – Muškat. Thanks to its position and microclimate, it is unique in the world, and has the status of protected designation of origin. Where to try it? In the kingdom of Muškat wine – in Momjan on July 20th. This festival of muscat wine will celebrate this divine grape variety with wine tastings from winemakers Kozlović, Markežić, Sinković, Prelac and Brajko. The event will take place near the medieval Momjan castle, where visitors can enjoy a rich cultural program and learn about Momjan history while sipping a glass or two.
